Protecting Your Pool Equipment: A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

Most homeowners don't give much thought to the pool equipment sitting beside their house. As long as everything is running and the water looks good, why would they?

A recent Pool Magazine article highlights a concern worth paying attention to: pool equipment theft.

Think about what's sitting on your equipment pad. Pumps, heaters, salt systems, and automation controls can add up to thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, much of that equipment is installed outdoors with very little protection.

A Few Simple Precautions

You don't need to turn your backyard into Fort Knox, but there are a few things worth considering.

  • Secure the equipment area. A locking gate or properly designed enclosure can discourage unauthorized access.
  • Install motion lighting. A little extra visibility can make an equipment pad less attractive to thieves.
  • Consider a security camera. Make sure it actually covers the equipment, especially if it's tucked around the side of the house.
  • Secure the equipment. Tamper-resistant mounting hardware can make removal more difficult.
  • Document what you own. Take pictures of your equipment, including model and serial numbers. Keep them with your home records.

One important thing to remember: Pool equipment needs proper ventilation, drainage, and room for servicing. Don't sacrifice safety or accessibility trying to lock everything down.

Protect Your Investment

Replacing a stolen pump or heater isn't just expensive. Damaged plumbing, electrical repairs, and downtime can make the situation even worse.

Take a few minutes to look at your equipment pad. Is it easily accessible from the street? Is the gate secured? Would anyone notice someone back there?

Sometimes the simplest precautions make the biggest difference.

Your pool equipment is a significant investment. It's worth protecting.
